Tolnaftate, miconazole nitrate or undecylenic acid
Three active ingredients run through the Hongo Killer line. Each is on the FDA's list for over-the-counter antifungals, at the strength the labels print.

What are the active ingredients in Hongo Killer products?
There are 3: tolnaftate 1%, miconazole nitrate 2% and undecylenic acid at 20% or 25%. Each product carries one of them, named on the first line of its Drug Facts panel.
| Active ingredient | Strength on the panel | Hongo Killer products | Uses on those panels | Prevention claim |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tolnaftate | 1% | Antifungal Powder, Spray Powder, Antifungal Cream, Cream Family Size | Athlete's foot, Jock itch, Ringworm | Yes, athlete's foot |
| Undecylenic acid | 20% and 25% | Antifungal Spray, Antifungal Solution | Athlete's foot, Ringworm | No |
| Miconazole nitrate | 2% | Ultra Spray Liquid | Athlete's foot, Jock itch, Ringworm | No |
What the FDA's list says
Over-the-counter antifungals for the skin are sold under one federal rule. It names the permitted ingredients and their strengths, and the Hongo Killer panels match it line for line.
(e) Tolnaftate 1 percent.
(c) Miconazole nitrate 2 percent.
(f) Undecylenic acid, calcium undecylenate, copper undecylenate, and zinc undecylenate may be used individually or in any ratio that provides a total undecylenate concentration of 10 to 25 percent.
Tolnaftate
Tolnaftate 1% is the ingredient in four Hongo Killer products: both powders and both creams. It is also the only ingredient the rule allows to be labeled for prevention of athlete's foot.
Tolnaftate stops the growth of fungi that cause skin infections, including athlete's foot, jock itch, and ringworm.
Tolnaftate comes as a cream, liquid, powder, gel, spray powder, and spray liquid for application to the skin.
Miconazole nitrate
One product in the line carries miconazole nitrate 2%: Ultra Spray Liquid. Its panel lists all three conditions.
Miconazole is in a class of antifungal medications called imidazoles.
Not all products should be used to treat all of these conditions. Please read the label for each product to select the one to treat your condition.
What other over-the-counter antifungal ingredients are there?
Several, and Hongo Killer sells none of them. The FDA's list also names clotrimazole 1 percent, and the CDC's page on treatment names clotrimazole, terbinafine and ketoconazole among non-prescription products.
| Ingredient | What a public source says | In the Hongo Killer line | When to take it instead |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clotrimazole | On the FDA's list at 1 percent. Code of Federal Regulations: 21 CFR Part 333, Subpart C: Topical Antifungal Drug Products | Not sold | Better choice when a doctor or pharmacist has named clotrimazole for you |
| Terbinafine | Mayo Clinic: "The antifungal terbinafine (Lamisil AT) has been shown to be highly effective." Mayo Clinic: Athlete's foot: diagnosis and treatment | Not sold | Better choice when you want the ingredient Mayo Clinic singles out for athlete's foot |
| Ketoconazole | Named by the CDC among non-prescription products. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention: Treatment of Ringworm | Not sold | Better choice when a doctor has recommended it by name |
