About the brand

What Hongo Killer is

Hongo Killer cream, powder, spray powder, Ultra spray liquid, pump spray and solution side by side

A name that says what it is for

Hongo is the Spanish word for fungus, and the Hongo Killer trademark registration gives that translation in so many words. The mark has been on the U.S. register since 1993 for one kind of product: treatment for the athlete's foot.

The packs speak both languages. A carton reads Cream on one face and Crema on the other, Powder and Polvo, Spray and Rociador, Nail Formula and Fórmula para las Uñas. The Drug Facts panel is printed in English, and the cream and spray cartons print a Spanish panel beside it.

Hongo Killer is a short line. It does not sell socks, insoles or foot soaks. It sells antifungals for the skin in the forms a drugstore shelf carries, plus one cosmetic for nails.

The active ingredients

Read the top line of each Drug Facts panel and the line sorts itself into three groups. Hongo Killer puts tolnaftate 1% in its powder, its spray powder and both of its creams. Ultra Spray Liquid carries miconazole nitrate 2%. The pump spray and the brush-on solution carry undecylenic acid, at 20% and 25%.

All three are on the FDA's list of active ingredients for over-the-counter antifungals for the skin, at these strengths. That list also decides what a label may claim. It explains why the Uses on a Hongo Killer panel read much like the Uses on any other brand with the same ingredient.

So the first choice is the ingredient, and the panel is where you find it. The name on the front of the pack tells you the form.

    2 brush-on bottles

The same ingredient in four carriers

Tolnaftate 1% comes four ways in the Hongo Killer range: a shake-on powder, an aerosol powder, a half-ounce cream and a one-ounce cream. The ingredient and its strength do not change. What changes is how it goes on and how much you get.

A powder covers a whole foot and the inside of a shoe line in one shake. A cream stays where you put it, which suits a small patch. An aerosol reaches without touching the skin. The price per ounce follows the form: $2.10 per oz for the powder against $13.76 per oz for the small cream.

The tolnaftate products are also the only ones in the line whose panels mention prevention of athlete's foot with daily use. The FDA's rule allows that claim for tolnaftate alone.

Where every label draws the line

Each Hongo Killer drug label ends its directions with the same sentence: this product is not effective on the scalp or nails. Each one says not to use it on children under 2 years of age unless a doctor directs it.

Each one also sets a stopping point. If there is no improvement within 4 weeks for athlete's foot or ringworm, or within 2 weeks for jock itch, the panel says to stop and ask a doctor. The sprays and the solution carry a flammability warning as well.

Nail Formula by Hongo Killer stands apart from the rest. Its carton states that it does not contain a drug. It is sold for the look of discolored nails, and it has no Drug Facts panel.

Twice a day

How the labels say to use them

The same three steps run through every Drug Facts panel in the line.

Directions by form
  1. Clean and dry

Wash the affected area and dry it thoroughly. On feet, that includes the spaces between the toes.

  2. Apply a thin layer

Put a thin layer over the affected area twice daily, morning and night, or as directed by a doctor.

  3. Keep to the label

The panels give 4 weeks of daily use for athlete's foot and ringworm, and 2 weeks for jock itch. If the condition persists longer, they tell you to consult a doctor.

Most of the range is sold one pack at a time, and several products also come in multi-packs. A multi-pack lowers the price of each ounce only some of the time, so check the per-ounce figure beside every pack size.

and it smells like rubbing alcohol now as well

The formula has changed since I last bought this a few years ago. It used to smell purely medicinal, and now it has some scents and perfumes added to it, and it's consistency is a LOT thinner, and it smells like rubbing alcohol now as well. It still works, but it's a completely different formula than the one made a few years ago, so beware. I'm not sure it works quite as well as the old formula, but it does keep your feet smelling nice all day long, even though it's really strong at first.

Use as directed, read the tiny print.

This product is not to be confused with the larger spray can. The liquid in this small pump spray bottle is different. This stuff smells very strong and tends to work rather well. 3 or 4 pumps per foot at most. ONLY apply this to your FEET and TOES. It will feel like being sterilized by fire on the more tender parts of your body. I think my bean bag pulled up somewhere behind my liver.

Does the job!

It has a funny name, Hongo Killer, but it does a great job. Daily use helps keep the areas dry and protected. The price and quakity are spot on. I really like Hongo Killer Antifungal Powde.

Like product, but ceased spraying

I love the product, but two cans ceased spraying even though they were both more than half full.
